How TMS can treat PTSD

June 26, 2019

An estimated 8% or 24.4 million Americans have PTSD.

What is PTSD?

PTSD or post-traumatic stress disorder is a form of mental health disorder that can occur in people who have witnessed a traumatic event. It can be a natural disaster, combat/war, rape/sexual assault, or serious accident.

Although it’s a condition known among combat veterans, PTSD doesn’t just affect them. It can happen to anyone.

Treating PTSD

PTSD can disrupt one’s day-to-day life. It can cause a person to have intense and disturbing thoughts and feelings. Some people also experience relieving the traumatic event through nightmares or flashbacks. It often leads to a mix of emotions – sadness, fear, anger, and may even feel detached from other people.

Traditionally, PTSD is managed through a combination of talk therapy (also known as psychotherapy) and medication. However, not everyone had experienced a positive result from these.

TMS or transcranial magnetic stimulation is a non-invasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate certain nerve cells in the brain. This form of therapy can directly influence brain activity and can have varying effects.

The effects of TMS depends on different factors, including the areas that are targeted, the depth of the effect into the brain, and the subjective experience of an individual.

Since its approved use in the U.S. for major depressive disorder, the use of TMS therapy has expanded including PTSD.

The therapy’s effect on the movement of the neurons can shift the overall state of the brain. It can help shift patterns in disordered cognition or emotion processing and slow down hyperactive circuits. These mechanisms can definitely help those with PTSD who often suffer from other mental health conditions such as depression and OCD.

Several studies have shown the effectiveness of TMS among PTSD patients. These studies have shown that TMS can help reduce the symptoms and can be a good adjunct therapy to psychotherapy.
